The LTC Class consists of classroom instruction and range qualification. The classroom portion of the course covers Texas law on the use of force, Texas gun laws, nonviolent dispute resolution, handgun use and safety, and safe storage of handguns. This part of the course lasts approximately 5 to 6 hours and is followed by a twenty-five multiple choice question exam. The exam is not difficult and requires no pre-class study or preparation to pass.
The range portion of the course involves firing 50 rounds of ammunition including 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards and 10 rounds at 15 yards. A score of 175 points is required to pass. (There are a total of 250 points available.) If anyone does not pass the range qualification on the first attempt, students can shoot it three times if necessary. You can shoot any handgun of your choice so long as it is a firearm, i.e. not an airgun, etc. The most popular calibers used are .22 and 9mm, but the choice is yours.
